Yogurtini Founder Blazes The Way For Young Entrepreneurs

1) You founded self-serving frozen yogurt company Yogurtini – what drew you to this unusual niche market?

My sister and I have been frozen yogurt fanatics since we were kids. We were both living in CA but in different cities, we were always visiting different yogurt shops and texting each other when we would find a new flavor we liked. When we would return home to Arizona to visit family and friends we were not satisfied with the choices we had. We had the same idea at the same time, which we often do. So, I wrote up a business plan, we started researching, became yogurt experts after a year and Yogurtini was launched.

Friend of Yogurtini Self Serve and Editor of Ms. Fitness Magazine Weighs in on Yogurt!

Greta Blackburn is the founding editor of Ms. Fitness Magazine, celebrity trainer and also the founder of FitCamp. (If you haven’t gone to her FitCamp in Malibu, make the trip!)

I decided to ask her what her health take is on YOGURT! She shed some light on a few things even we didn’t know!

And remember, Yogurtini ALWAYS offers one no sugar added and one non-dairy flavor!

Greta Blackburn:

Did you know that your body contains approximately 400 types of bacteria weighing approximately 3½ pounds?

Sounds nasty, I know, but most of these bacteria live in your gastrointestinal system where they play the vital role of metabolizing the food you eat. Less than one percent are pathogenic or toxic.

My good health, and yours too, depends upon maintaining a proper balance between various groups of bacteria, what scientists call “intestinal flora.”

Stress, the onset of a cold or flu, taking antibiotics, alcohol, bad food and even lack of sleep can throw off this balance. Even harmful things in the environment, such as mercury or lead, can do the same thing.

For me, eating yogurt is the best way to maintain this crucial balance. The reason, of course, and I know you all probably know this, is because yogurt contains “friendly bacteria” called “probiotics.”

When you eat yogurt on a regular basis the first thing you’ll notice is just how “regular” you are. It’s amazing really, but I won’t bore you with the details.

For me though, it’s much much more. The probiotics in yogurt boost my immune system which I think is the reason I hardly ever get a cold.

Scientists tell me there are even more benefits including increased lactose tolerance, better resistance to infections, improved HDL/LDL cholesterol ratio, anti-carcinogenic properties, inhibition of food pathogens, aid to liver function, and a hedge against osteoporosis.

But, for me, here’s the clincher. Yogurt prevents bad breath!

Yogurtini in the news

Yogurtini to make cool debut near ASU in October

DAVID WOODFILL, TRIBUNE

Sometimes nothing hits the spot more than some frozen yogurt and hot sauce.

That’s one of the more unusual concoctions customers will be able to create at a self-serve yogurt shop opening near Arizona State University in Tempe.

Yogurtini, which will open sometime in October at the northeast corner of University Drive and Rural Road, will also have some safer choices for the less-daring yogurt lover.

The shop will feature a bar with more than 50 toppings ranging from granola and fruit to the more daring items, including espresso beans and, yes, hot sauce – Sriracha hot sauce, to be exact.

It’s a typical favorite choice at many Thai cuisine restaurants and one of the few condiments you’d find in my refrigerator right next to my mayonnaise.

Yogurt dispensed from the shop’s five machines will rotate between flavors like cheesecake, peanut butter, mango and green tea. Because the yogurt is self-serve, prices are based on weight.
